Mentoring: The Student-Alumni Connection

Executive Director of Alumni & Events Jenny DellOn May 4th and 5th, the Brenau alumni family welcomed new graduates into our fold. The class of 2013 is impressive. Each of these women and men exemplify the Brenau Ideal through their commitment to excellent education and dedication to the high standards of this institution.

The majority of our Women’s College graduates are entering the workforce for the first time. Some are returning to fulltime employment after time away to finish their studies. Many of our nontraditional graduates may have been working for years, and are eager to apply their new advanced skills toward a promotion within their field or to a transition into a new career.

No matter the path, all of these newest Brenau alumni can benefit from you. The Office of Alumni & Events is working with Dr. Maria Zayas, professor of psychology, and George Bagel, director of career services, to establish mentorships between alumni and students. Mentoring is an excellent way for you to give back to Brenau – and to your profession. Whether you choose to commit to serve as a mentor for one day, one week, one semester, or a full academic year, your real-world contribution to the educations of our current students will make a significant impact on their futures. You may be surprised by what our extraordinary student body can contribute to you and your business!

To volunteer as a mentor, please register online at www.brenau.edu/alum or (770) 534-6164. We will match you with an opportunity that supports your interests and a student that can benefit from your area of expertise and sphere of influence. In addition, I encourage you to reach out to your fellow graduates through online networking. Join the Brenau Alumni group on LinkedIn and explore the professional connections of more than 750 group members. Post job opportunities, ask questions relevant to your field, and seek advice in business areas in which you need assistance.

We look forward to introducing our mentorship program, as well as other networking opportunities in the coming months (including a “Brenau for Breakfast” speaker series in metro Atlanta, several “Brenau Business Builders” seminars regionally, and a Women’s College leadership conference in the spring.

As always, thank you for your dedication to your Alma Mater!
