Tennis, Softball Stall in Nationals

After a bumpy start to the season, the unranked Golden Tigers softball team was not supposed to make it to the national championship tournament. The tennis team, at one point ranked No. 5 in the nation, was. Although both made the cut to appear in the big 2016 season-ending show, both Tigers teams made rare empty-handed trips back home.

Brenau Golden Tigers logoWith a nice boost from conference play, the Tigers’ softball team got an unexpected invitation to join the 40-team championship bracket. However, in the double-elimination first round, it dropped two games to Georgia Gwinnett, including a heartbreaking 4-3 seventh-inning loss to bring the season to an end.

The Tigers’ tennis team made it to the quarterfinals stage of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics 2016 Women’s tournament but were eliminated by No. 4 SCAD-Savannah. Three Brenau tennis players were named All-Americans, including Rebecca Pijils, a freshman from Beek, The Netherlands, Maya Mammetgulyyeva, a freshman from Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, and 2016 Southern States Athletic Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Year Fatyha Berjane, a senior from Casablanca, Morocco.
