Building a Bigger, Better Quad
Ongoing redevelopment is transforming the campus green into a more active, yet intimate, space for students and faculty alike.
With the construction of four new sorority houses and an all new residential campus hall along Prior Street comes another development for Brenau: a 31,000-square-foot, fully renovated greenspace.
The $200,000 project includes an expanded and freshly sodded lawn, which has been elevated near the lower end of the courtyard near Brenau’s famed fountain. The redevelopment also replaced some older sidewalks, with a new brick walkway laid near the gazebo patio.
The redevelopment also entailed revamped patio space for the Tea Room and a minor facelift to the Delta Delta Delta gazebo.
The alterations aren’t merely cosmetic, either. Some trees and shrubs have been pruned to improve sightlines, while the antique light posts have been rewired with new LED light bulbs for improved security.
“The most visual impact was accomplished by the installation of the Brenau University Women’s College Arch,” said Brenau Director of Facilities Michael Hollimon. “The historic sign is anchored on granite pillars symbolizing the strength of Brenau students and alumni and the heritage of the university.”
Hollimon said the project is nearing completion, with gaps in the quad to be filled in over the next 12-to-15 months. Among other additions planned for 2016 are more seating, picnic tables and landscaping to create a visual barrier between the courtyard and the Academy Building.
Hollimon said the more level greenspace provides more functionality for students, staff and faculty. The flatter surface is perfect for games, social get-togethers and maybe even a few outdoor classes, while the enclosed area also makes it a tranquil place for studying and meditation.
“As the landscaping continues to mature, the space will have a much more intimate feel,” Hollimon said. “However it is used, people are going to find a new place that is welcoming.”
